Bennies are your friend. Give your players more chances to earn bennies in play = reduced lethality.

Very good article - and good advice too.
I'd point out too that while it is a very good idea to run the game as written first, once you get the hang of it it's a great game to tweak to suit your style.

I think I remember that one, Sitting Duck. And to Garlick that's a very good question. Give me a couple of days and I'll post a nice response about the tweaking lethality in Savage Worlds.

I recall a cartoon in an issue of Dragon from back in the Eighties which perfectly illustrated the more absurd aspects of hit point systems. There's a sign announcing the execution of Og the Barbarian or something like that. We see Og tied to a post and absolutely riddled with arrows. Facing him is a squad of archers and a guy with a scroll. The guy with the scroll says, "Sorry, but he still has twenty-three hit points left."

Okay, having just run a session of Savage Worlds (Deadlands Reloaded), I've seen how every combat roll has the potential to straight-up kill a PC. Do you have any advice for how to handle that? I'm getting from the rest of SW's advice - fun, fast, furious, and all - that shying away from confrontation isn't really intended in the game's design. I'm aware the PC's should be diving for cover. Are there some other tactics for the players that help mitigate the possibility of taking a bullet to the eye? Or is it taken as read that sometimes PC's just bite it?

Not right now. Playing in a couple Pathfinder games. But I've got three Savage ideas that I'm working on whenever the mood strikes me.
