Even grognards a musical nod now and then. Hey, I remember coloring in my dice with a crayon. Heck, Red Box was a new thing. Used it to replace my white one. Yeah, I’m a crusty old grognard. Ahh, those were the days of no mortgages and dreary day jobs that slowly killed that last little bit your soul. Oh, wait. I digress. Just sit back a listen to the music and reminisce on this hump day.
Well, we trounced the king of Pit Axe’s army and we started this session by trouncing him and his consort.
It was one of those quick and brutal fights. We literally caught him with his pants down. It was done and over with in a couple of rounds. We played around a bit in the castle and pretty much dispersed his mercenaries. It was nice touch sending the barbarians after the trolls. Seems like two problems took care of themselves.
We did a little planning and headed straight off towards the big bad of the whole adventure path, the nymph queen Nyrissa. OK, that was a bit of a mistake. But hell, we were feeling really cocky after blowing away the king. We stormed off into some alternate warped fairy tale dimension. And we got our butts stomped. I mean it was just a few crazy treants and some water elementals. How bad could it be?
Overconfidence and a complete lack of preparation can make the DM’s job so much easier. The bard scampered to safety and went invisible. While I got dropped to stone cold dead in a couple of rounds. Buffs and spells. Ha. I’ll just stand here and see if I can heal myself faster than these can dish our damage. Obviously, I was really unsuccessful with this tactic.
It was damned good and epic fight. And weren’t any near getting to the boss. So we retreated back to do some more planning and get that crazy half-orc resurrected.
Vecna asked him for a hand.
Even his mace is Vorpal.
Monte Cook asks him for rules clarifications.
He considered the Tomb of Horrors an introductory adventure.
Out of respect. His d20′s roll 21.
He has Chuck Norris as a hireling.
He attacked the darkness. And crit’ed it.
Mordenkainen named a spell after him.
Hit dump stat is a 19.
Dragons have to make a save versus Fear when they face him.
He uses Stormbringer as a letter opener.
He once won a staring contest against a Medusa.
I’m sure there are more legends of the Dungeon Bastard out there.
At the end of our last Pathfinder session, we had a little discussion about what to play next. The general consensus was Deadlands.

Now, if you stopped by here now and then you know that I’m a big Savage Worlds fan. But here’s the deal we’re aren’t going with the Savage Worlds version. We’re going with the original version. That’s right, pardner. We’re turning back the clock and going Old School Deadlands. Of course, that also means a mad dash to the packed up boxes of old gaming stuff and hitting all of local used bookstores. The neat thing about it is that now, I can easily see the evolution of Savage Worlds. Funny like that.
I have faith in our game master and this is going to be a blast. Just like our Kingmaker game, I’m going to post the good parts and this time I really don’t have to worry too much about spoilers. I think at last count there about four or five sessions left in the Kingmaker game. With our schedule that puts us at about late March or so. Stay tuned for that goodness.
What you were expecting some Valentine’s Day stuff?
Call it crazy mid-life crisis or whatever but in fit of insanity, I decided to try to learn how to play the harmonica.
I did the usual DIY type thing. I bought a couple “Teach Yourself To Play The Harmonica” books and got a couple of really cheap assed harps (A really cheap no name brand with one of my “Teach Yourself” books and a Hohner Blues Band). I found out that I liked it and it was fun. But I also realized that like so many other things, you get what you pay for and a cheap harmonica sounds and plays like a cheap harmonica. So I went on a quest to find a good harp.
I mustered my Google Fu and hit the internets and started reading various harmonica forums. (Yes, it’s the internet. There’s a forum for everything.) It basically boiled down to two harps; a Hohner Special 20 and a Lee Oskar Major. This is a much debated topic. But here’s what was interesting. There were strong opinions about the products but I never saw a single personal attack or the infamous “You’re playing it wrong”.
So what the hell is wrong with gamers? The bitching and trolling doesn’t make a better game. For a game that supposed to social, there’s one hell of a lot of anti-social behavior going on. I ain’t got a solution other than just be the better person and don’t empower the trolls. Don’t play their game. Don’t feed their ego.
And in case anyone is wondering. I decided on the Special 20 for now. But the Lee Oskar is still on my shopping list along with a Seydel Blues Session and a Turbo Harp.
