It’s that time of year when I start thinking about horror games and not only the ones I’ve played a lot but the ones that are there sitting in the wings waiting to get dusted off and played. In this case Dread and it’s follow ups.
The setting for Dread reminds more of Kult than Call of Cthulhu, Supernatural or other games. The characters are a supernaturally supercharged but there’s a price for that, of course. The things you end up fighting are just down freaky. And to put frankly down disturbing but then you’re fighting the freaks of hell. Would expect them to stick to G rated stuff? No. Heck the game is your face and the world is freaky and very dark place. The rules of engagement are determined by the lowest common denominator. In other words, being high and mighty will probably just get you killed or worse.
On the game mechanics side, it’s pretty easy d12 based system. Nothing freaky or lame here. I wouldn’t exactly call it rules lite. Sort of like rules medium. Just enough to keep things on even keel but not so much that you need a spread sheet and a dedicated computer to keep track of what is going on.
And here’s the neat part. It’s free. And the even neater part. A new edition is coming along in the very near future. So go check it out at Drive Thru RPG.
