I like quirky stuff and maybe that’s why I’m excited about Machinations of the Space Princess.
If you remember way back when James Raggi did the huge adventure crowd sourcing campaign for like 19 adventures for Lamentations of the Flame Princess then you’ll remember that Machinations was one of those projects. James Desborough of Postmortem Studios brought this project back as a stand alone game based on LotFP and it’s being illustrated by Satine Phoenix.

Fund it.

So just what the hell is Machinations? I’ll put it simply Heavy Metal (or Metal Hurlant). Not the music. I’m talking about the magazine. We’re talking over the top science fantasy. It’s swords and ray guns. It’s crazy space aliens and lost planets. It’s Barberlla, Fifth Element, Dune, Star Wars, Flash Gordon, Farscape, Lexx and hell you could tweak just about Sci-Fi story into an adventure for this.
So what’s under the hood on this one? Well, since it’s based on Lamentations then things should end up pretty simple. Not overly crunchy and a setting that has so many options when it comes what could happen that’s a good thing. The simple gaggle of OSR type classes. Expert, Psion, Scholar and Warrior. No set races or races as classes but a simple DIY build your own race system including robots. Anything that easily inspires creativity in players gets a thumbs up.
Just like LotFP, Machinations looks very much to be in the school of “Make up neat shit”. It’s not a science lesson. Definitely a game that centers around the Rule of Cool. Some of the rules are being tweaked. The Skill system and Saves are more robust and genre appropriate. Armor and AC are being tweaked so having both swords and blasters make sense. Here’s an official early iteration of a character for your perusal.
All in all, this is going to be one hell of a game when it comes out. It’s definitely going to go on the “Hey, guys! Why don’t we play this?” list.
